First Thoughts: No. 6

Asking for sex before leaving to study abroad is normal to ask of your guy friend. Or at least it is that way with Safu, who asks Shion to give her his sperm in the 2nd episode. What an odd gift request. No. 6 is about Nezumi, or Mouse, who escapes from the hunters and finds shelter at Shion’s, 12, house for a night. Shion was soon to enter the gifted program, but sheltering Nezumi, who is a criminal, makes him lose his chance to do so. Instead Shion starts to lose his faith in the town, No. 6, and wonder what is the higher ups are hiding from them. No. 6 is definitely an intriguing and serious anime for the summer season.

Time skips can be useful if you know how to use them and thankfully No. 6 understands the right way to use them. The first episode covers the back story of how Shion first meets Nezumi and how he starts to doubt the government of the city. The second episode is the start of the actual story and takes place 4 years after the first episode. Shion has lost his chance to become part of the gifted program and has to move to the lower class housing. It introduces that there is a big problem going on in the city with an infection causing people to look old right before dying. Shion witnesses this and doubts his loyalty to the city when they keep the deaths under wraps.

The characters are well thought out characters. They all seem like serious and sometimes hot-headed types. Shion is the one that sort of breaks it up. He is very much a dreamer at the beginning. He doesn’t seem to pay attention to Safu’s lecture until the fight occurs. He is able to recite what she says. Safu, on the other hand, is serious, bold and hot-headed. When someone makes fun of her for being poor, she is definitely ready to beat them up. A few days before going abroad to No. 5, she tells Shion that she wants to have sex with him. She likes Shion, but he is oblivious and doesn’t really feel that way toward her. Nezumi would definitely be the serious rebel of the cast. He is clear about what he thinks about No. 6 and does not care what trouble he will have to cause to get away or to help someone out.  The characters are the ones that really carry the series along.

The story itself is something I’m really looking forward to. Nezumi and Shion are finally together and out of No. 6. Shion is finally aware that No. 6 is not what it really seems. He knows about the infections that are being caused by bees now. The idea of having a secret infection going around a seemingly perfect town really brings up about conspiracies. I think that is what makes the story really amazing. They have conspiracies going around with the infection as well as the hunters chasing around the criminals.

No. 6 may be a slow series right now, but I can definitely see it picking up from here on out. I’ll definitely be watching to see what will happen to Shion and also to see what the government is keeping under wraps.
