A small, Japanese girl goes with a Frenchman to Paris. And she becomes an attendant at his and his grandson’s sign shop. Those are the basics of Ikoku Meiro no Croisee. At first, I did not expect too much from the show. After all, to me, it was just a show about a girl in a new country where she doesn’t understand anything. Well, it proved me wrong, but not before confusing me.
The grandfather says that Yune does not understand a word of what he and Claude, the grandson, say. So Claude does not expect much from her and gets mad at her when anything goes wrong. He even tells her to go home, and instead of doing that, she gives him her prized kimono from her mother in order to sell it and make up for breaking the sign. At the end of the first episode, she proves them wrong. She can actually speak French. That just boggles my mind that they would do say all of a sudden that she actually knows French.
I was surprised that the grandfather and Claude could understand what she was saying, since they only thought she knew Japanese. Or rather I was surprised that Claude could understand and talk to her because he was the only one of the three who did not go to, or live in, Japan. I guess in the 19th Century, people could learn how to speak Japanese in Paris.
The fact that Yune wanted to like what Claude and the grandfather liked was really cute. She did not like the cheese or the coffee, but she kept saying she did. They told her she didn’t have to try so hard, but she just wanted to like what they did and wouldn’t let them stop her from trying. I definitely can’t wait to see more of her reactions to things in Paris while Claude is still trying to at least swallow that dried plum.
