First Thoughts: Natsume Yuujinchou San

Natsume and his spirits are back! The first episode of the third season of Natsume Yuujinchou jumps right back into the swing of the series. Natsume still has the ever shrinking Book of Friends that his grandmother created. The first episode not only starts where it leaves off but it also makes me want more.

It was nice that it just got back into the story without having to explain much of the back story between Natsume and the Book of Friends. Natsume is still giving people back their names, and Nyanko-sensei still complains about it. The personality of Natsume and Nyanko-sensei are as great as usual. Nyanko-sensei says that he isn’t a bodyguard but he will end up saving Natsume when he is in trouble anyway. The plot for the episode was well done with how Reiko and Natsume had helped the old lady spirit in about the same way. They were both nice to her, even though the two reacted differently, in the end, when they found out that the old lady was a spirit. The episode seemed to contain different connecting but separate stories as well. There is the old lady and then the spirit that is after Natsume. The spirit that is after Natsume also connected the teacup spirit, to its story, that would go around the house warning them that there is danger near. I like how they had the little teacup spirit and am sad to see what happened to it at the end of the episode.

I’m a little disappointed that none of the major supporting characters who usually show up were there, but more information on Reiko’s past was a nice addition to the first episode of the season. I can’t wait to seek what happens between Natsume and Nyanko-sensei. I just hope that Natsume being bitten doesn’t turn out to be something too awful.
