First Thoughts: Kamisama no Memo-chou

A Gothic Lolita NEET, shut-ins, who solves mysteries. All from her apartment. Kamisama no Memo-chou is about a gothic lolita, named Alice, with a group of 3 soon-to-be 4 guys who solve cases. This is just one of the new shows of the summer season. It was different, but just as good as I was expecting. Especially since the first episode was about an hour.

The group of four consist of Major (or Mukai), Tetsu, Hiro and finally Narumi, who recently joined after having been reintroduced to the other 3 by his classmate, Ayaka. Narumi, at first, didn’t want to be part of the group, but the other 3 and Alice give him no choice. On his first case, he finds out what each of the group members’ jobs are. Major is in charge of setting cameras up and tailing people. Testu and Hiro both ask around for info. Hiro gets his info from talking to females, while Tetsu talks to the police officers. Narumi ends up being the most all-around, and will talk to the people involved in the case.

Other than the first episode being about an hour long, I really enjoyed it. I really like the different kinds of characters there are. They have a few different types of people. Narumi mentioned Hiro as a gigolo. Another example would be Major who is a gunji otaku, or a military nut. The idea of the show is cool. I like how they are having a NEET, or a few NEETs as in this anime, solving cases. I’m a big mystery fan, and the idea for the show is definitely unique.  The art of the show is also nice and detailed as well. I like how each of the characters look, especially Alice. They even have a normal-looking main character which is always a nice change of pace. The background is very detailed as well.

I was a little disappointed with how quick the first case was solved and how simple it seemed to be, but I still have high hopes for the rest of the series. After all, the preview for the next episode seems like it will be really interesting with Narumi excited to be the assistant of Alice.
