The second part of the 4th Week of Summer Anime is finally here. We have a lot to discuss between tentacle-like things to taking care of children. Today I'll be talking about the 4th episodes of Usagi Drop, Mawaru Penguindrum, Blood-C, Mayo Chiki!, No. 6, Kamisama no Memochou, and Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi. We also have the 3rd episode of Dantalion no Shoka. Click on the jump to see the notes on this installments episodes.
Usagi Drop
In the 4th episode of Usagi Drop, Daikichi and Rin seem to have their routine figured out. Daikichi is able to pick Rin up at a more regular time, and Rin isn’t as exhausted on the way back. They focus more on what is happening in their lives instead of the strain of figuring out how to take care of a kid. Part of the episode was the friendship between Rin and her brown-haired classmate, Kouki. Kouki had no problem defending Rin, even if it meant him badmouthing that person. Rin, on the other hand, would in turn protect Kouki, but she would just take him away from the situation instead. The two of them have a similar circumstance. Rin lives with Daikichi, while Kouki lives only with his mom. So the two both have a single parent, or guardian in Rin’s case, living situation. Daikichi does find that Kouki’s mom is very beautiful.
The other part of the episode, which is my favorite part, is when Daikichi and Rin go to Daikichi’s farewell party. The party was for leaving his original post in the company before he asked for a switch because it was too hard otherwise to take care of Rin. Daikichi wasn’t planning to go, but with his coworker, Gotou, asking, he decided it couldn’t hurt to go. Gotou brought her son, while Daikichi brought Rin. Rin didn’t enjoy the farewell party at first, but soon everyonewas having a good time. Though, Daikichi does find out that there are still people who can’t understand why he would change departments. They feel more betrayed by it than anything, but Daikichi feels that what they say isn’t as important as what he is doing for Rin.
No. 6
Messages are sent between Shion’s mother and Rat, but Shion also sends a message to his mother. After knowing that Shion is fine, his mother finally sends information about a person who used to work for the newspaper, Latch Bill. So, the two went out to meet with this person to gather any information possible. The person they meet, Rikiga, notices that Rat acts in stage plays. His stage name is Eve. He tells Rat, Eve, that he should join with him, and basically sell himself to get more money than he could get from acting. Rat declines, but Shion still attacks Rikiga. He doesn’t like how Rikiga insults Rat. Rat is luckily, or maybe unluckily, able to pull Shion away before he kills the guy, and then they leave.
At the end of the episode, Rat had a run-in with the Dogkeeper. The Dogkeeper has found out Rat’s weakness. After all, Shion can get a reaction out of Rat when he is usually emotionless. The Dogkeeper brings her attack dogs where she knows Rat will be, and tells them to attack him. He is able to take care of himself well, but the fight is interrupted by Shion.
For a show that isn’t a BL one, there sure are enough hints that way.
Blood-C
Mokona in the lunchbox! I was able to quickly glance at it when Saya opened her lunchbox to share her lunch with Tokizane. I keep feeling like he is going to play a bigger part in the series, but so far nothing has happened. When the two were having lunch, they talked about Fumito, the owner of the cafĂ© Saya frequents, who Saya just happens to be in love with. I can’t say I’m surprised about that. It seems like such a CLAMP thing to do. Lunch ends soon enough.
At night, Saya is back to destroying monsters. This time there are more victims, 3, to be exact. There also happen to be 3 monsters. 2 of the monsters protect the larger bird monster. Unfortunately Saya has major difficulty in defeating the three monsters. It almost seems as though she will lose this round. She is not able to save the three of victims, but she is able to defeat the monsters. Before she defeats them, she is reminded again of the covenant. The time for her to ask and find the answers to the covenant is close by, or at least I hope so. I really want to know what this covenant, that they don’t want to explain yet, is.
Mayo Chiki!
In this episode, Subaru was kicked out of the house, so she went to see if Kinjirou would be fine with her staying during Golden Week. Subaru decides to become Kinjirou’s butler for that week, even though he says that he is fine without one. She isn’t one to take no for an answer. The two start the week off with a hard workout and then some instant ramen. As Kinjirou is going to take a bath, Subaru comes in to wash his back. Of course, it can’t go well because Kureha comes back after trying to fight a bear. She goes to the bathroom where she figures Kinjirou is, and almost finds out that Subaru is a female. Kinjirou and Subaru are able to fool Kureha by taking her mind off the female underwear she sees. What a close call.
The day does not stop there though. Suzutsuki joins in on the fun. She comes to be a maid, but Kinjirou tells her they don’t want one and that she should leave. She doesn’t like that and decides to have a contest between her and Subaru. It ends up being a crazy tournament that doesn’t make sense. One of the events is feeding the master, and it just doesn’t go quite well. The contest ends when Kinjirou falls sick with a cold. Both Subaru and Kureha get really scared, and Subaru goes overboard trying to heal him right away. Poor Kinjirou. Even with everything that Subaru does, and overkills on, Kinjirou gets better. That is mainly because Subaru ends up leaving to go make up with her father. It’s no wonder she was there. She and her father were kicked out because they were fighting, and they couldn’t go back to the house until they made up. What a disaster it ended up becoming.
Mawaru Penguindrum
The 4th episode was told mainly in a fairy tale way. Ringo kept daydreaming of her date as if she was at first a princess, but later a peasant compared to the actress who Tabuki-sensei seemed fonder of. The scenes seemed similar to that of the anime, Rose of Versailles. Though, the male, Tabuki, taking place of the male, or female, lead, Oscar, is a male through and through. Either way, Ringo would at first be the lead female, but was later the minor female character in a minute or two. Instead of being able to fulfill her goals with Tabuki, she manages to do them with Sho. She gets to have her first kiss with him after all, though Ringo believes that Tabuki was the one to do so. Oh, how she is blinded by her love for him.
While Sho is hanging out at the park “looking for birds,” Kanba is supposedly getting information on the Penguindrum. Instead of getting information on it, he is ambushed by his ex-girlfriend’s who are not happy with his playboy tactics.
The daydreams of the certain events Ringo was supposed to fulfill were interesting, but I don’t think I’ll be able to watch it in more than one episode if it’s going to be like this one. Otherwise, I’m really interested to see what the person with the other Penguindrum is going to do for her fate.
Dantalian no Shoka
The 3rd episode contained a book of knowledge and a bunch of orphaned kids. With the help of a Phantom Book, these orphaned kids can become extremely wise. They could even take over the world if they wanted to and no one could stop them. The kids decide that none of that matters, and instead hand over the book easily to Huey. Huey, Dalian and Camilla don’t care for the knowledge that is contained in the book given to them by the kids, so Huey lights it on fire. That’s one way to seal a Phantom Book. It definitely isn’t the way that I would expect them to seal it though.
The rest of the episode dealt with a plant that a group thought was a name of a book. Those poor souls. They sent robbers to Huey and Dalian’s home to retrieve the book. Huey and Dalian were tied up in the library while they were trying to find it. Luckily for the two, the robbers weren’t able to find it, but unluckily, Dalian’s chocolates were eaten. They got their payback. The robbers went to the greenhouse and met their end by the African cactus, with the name they thought was the book’s, that will eat anyone that goes near the book. The robbers were never seen again.
Kamisama no Memochou
The ramen must become better! Or at least the broth needs to be. Min-san has a customer at Hanamaru that will come, take one sip of the broth and then leave. Min-san takes Narumi hostage to make the broth even better. Narumi’s health becomes a victim in the all-nighters the two end up having, working on the broth.
The episode doesn’t really contain a case at the beginning, but with Min-san’s sarashis going missing, she enlists the help of Alice to find the culprit. Their one clue is that the stealing happens on the days that the mysterious man,who only takes a sip of the broth before leaving, is there. Alice sends people out to gather information and tells Major to set up cameras around the place. Min-san does not allow certain areas to have cameras, and Narumi does not figure to tell Alice about that right away. When he does, they decide to put a plan into action. Min-san is to act as a decoy while Narumi and the others stay out of sight, but nearby. They catch one of the culprits that sneak into the house. It just happens to be the one doing the most damage. Surprisingly, the only thing he cares about is getting Min-san to wear actual bras. This episode just surprised me with how nothing actually important happened. It was a good filler episode though.
Min-san and Narumi figured out who the other culprit was after seeing a recipe for ramen broth. Min-san made the broth, but it wasn’t as good as she thought it was when her father used to make it. Though, now she knows how to please the mysterious man.
Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi
Okay, I’m almost tempted to call the red, blobby things tentacles. The way that they use them in the episode just really makes me think that’s what they are. Not too much actually happens with them other than wrapping themselves around Himea and attacking Taito. It does kind of disturb me, but this series really likes going for these types of things. Sadly. Anyway, Himea is in need of help again and just as usual, Taito is useless. For someone who knows Karate, he doesn’t know how or when to use it. He just lets himself get killed or runs around. He doesn’t usually try to attack at all. He somehow manages to save Himea. Only with the power of never giving up.
Not only that, but Mirai and Gekkou disappear into a black tunnel. Before they do leave, Gekkou kisses Mirai on the forehead to transform her into a human-like Pikachu. She really does look like one, especially with how her ears, or hair, turn into Pikachu like ones. The two don’t seem to be very important in this episode. They only appear for 4 minutes tops. Where ever they are going must be pretty important to the story, otherwise they are just trying to get them out of the way for awhile. Neither one would surprise me, but I’m tempted to think the latter.
At the end of the episode, the importance of Taito’s friend, Haruka Shigure, is brought up. Sort of. She plays a role of watching the interaction between Taito and Himea, but it isn’t really told what she is doing. In the next few episodes we should be finding that out.
